This is my study of one of the greatest and most influential drummers of our time Brian Blade, focusing on some of the essential elements that make up his unique playing style and of course some of my favorite Phrases.
Studying Brian’s drumming in the process of creating this book has been of great impact on my drumming and reasoning on the drums. His improvisational, spontaneous, creative, dynamic, and deliberate approach to drumming is on a whole different level only Brian has been able to attain.
In this book, I was able to capture 50 different phrases played by Brian Blade from a couple of his videos on YouTube
Also Included are sticking information that tells the exact hand
playing each note and direct YouTube Video links with time-stamps to each clip the phrases are taken from. By clicking on the links, it automatically opens up the YouTube video.
The transcriptions are only a written representation of the notes played by Brian Blade and do not fully capture the dynamics, texture, subtle nuances, feel, and a whole lot of things put together which makes Brian’s unique and awesome sound and that is why it Is highly recommended to refer to the videos to see how Brian Executes each Phrase.
You can choose to execute them in the same context as Brian did or create your own context by playing them in different time signatures, tempos, and on different parts of the drums. There are endless ways in which you can
choose to apply these phrases. The most important is to create music and have so much fun.
